Pakhawaj is a traditional barrel-shaped, two-headed percussion drum central to Hindustani classical music, particularly Dhrupad style, originating from ancient Indian texts like Natya Shastra. Carved from a single block of hardwood like sheesham or tuning paste (syahi) on the right head for sharp tones and wheat paste on the left for bass, it produces rich, resonant sounds through palm, finger, and bol techniques.

Key Features
Barrel-shaped wooden body (e.g., sheesham, red sandalwood) with asymmetrical heads of layered goat or buffalo skin for deep bass and treble resonance.

Tunable via wooden wedges between leather straps and permanent syahi paste on the right head, plus temporary flour-water mix on the left for variable pitch.

Played seated on the lap using open palms, fingers, and slides to create complex bols like “Dugun,” “Tirgun,” and rhythms in talas such as Chautaal (14 beats).

Versatile for solo recitals, accompanying Dhrupad vocals, Rudra Veena, or Kathak dance, with a warm, earthy tone bridging Mridangam heritage.

Handcrafted by specialized artisans, varying in size (24-28 inches long) for portability and durability in performances or teaching.
